Horror Short Review: Happy Easter (2023)
From Jiya Kapur Films comes an Easter-based horror short that has psychological depth, dealing with darker themes, wrapped around a supernatural tale.
It begins in blood-spattered fashion, as we see the clear aftermath of someone’s suicide, with the camera panning over a limp and bloody hand to focus on a bunny toy nearby.
One year later, and it’s Easter, for whatever difference that makes.
The bunny is in a thrift store and is bought by a young woman who brings it home. A young woman with deep-rooted psychological issues relating to self-esteem. Something, that it turns out, the bunny is able to tap into and take advantage of.
A clever idea that is handled with an impressive amount of care. Jiya Kapur Films doesn’t always nail their shorts, but this is a hugely impressive watch. Really delving into the damage that low self-esteem can have on a person, and while it comes from a supernatural angle, there’s a message here about bullying in general. A strong and effective one, but one that ends in a more hopeful way.
However, while all of this is enjoyable, it’s hardly an Easter horror, and the bunny could have been any toy, and it wouldn’t make a difference to the story. Check it out yourself, below.
