EP Review: Encelado – Pillars of Creation (Regenerate Records)
Italian Death Metal duo, Encelado, will release debut EP, ‘Pillars of Creation’, on April 29th via Regenerate Records. Pillars Of Creation pays tribute to the elephant trunks of interstellar gas and dust in the Eagle Nebula photographed by the Hubble Telescope from NASA on April 1, 1995.

A hefty slice of lurid noise that fits the death metal mold, albeit, with an even rougher style of heaviness courtesy of vocal growls that are quite often indiscernible. Still, they certainly add a whole new dimension to this music, which is raw to the point of disgust.
In most music genres, summing it up with words like ‘disgusting’ would not be a good thing, but this is death metal, and the best death metal should leave you feeling a little nauseous.
That being said though, Encelado don’t just give us an album of ‘heard it all before’ heaviness, and across its four tracks there are moments that stand out. Moments of experimentation, moments of flair, and moments of cleverness. It doesn’t start off the strongest with Dark Nebulas, but Gravity and Fragments of Fear are both big, heavy, and powerful efforts. The EP ending with the horn-throwing and head-banging enjoyment of the title track.
Good stuff from Encelado. It will be cool to see how they develop when this is the level of their imagination already.
